Babette Goossens’s love story

” I know that L’imprimerie is an essential place for the community, as much for neighborhood life as for the flourishing of art, a practice that is accessible and democratic here, creating social ties and solidarity between the human beings who engage in it. ”

This year, L’imprimerie’s annual donation campaign celebrates its team of workers!

Throughout the donation campaign, we will introduce you to the team of workers, one precious person at a time, to highlight their respective expertise and include you even more in the heart of L’imprimerie. You will be introduced to each worker, as well as their love letter to L’imprimerie, printmaking and its artists.

Meet our mysterious administrative support manager, Babette! With her kindness and attention to detail as well as to the well-being of those around her, Babette is a wonderful colleague whose presence is essential to the smooth running of the center. <3

We invite you to discover her love story with L’imprimerie and her artistic practice through this article.

” The day I moved to Hochelaga, I took a walk around my new neighborhood. As I passed L’imprimerie, I thought how nice it must be to work there. I don’t know why, a daydream, a hunch? Maybe I was hoping to be able to print my own pictures and texts, make my own little books or learn new techniques. A few weeks later, my roommate sent me a job offer for a position at L’imprimerie; I didn’t hesitate, I applied. I’m really happy to have been able to join this bright, dedicated team, to work in such a pleasant setting, to be able to observe all these concentrated artists working on their personal projects, focused but always ready to share their research and questioning. It’s a real treat to be able to witness the exchanges between the artists, to hear their discussions in the workshop in the background. I know that L’imprimerie is an essential place for the community, as much for neighborhood life as for the flourishing of art, a practice that is accessible and democratic here, creating social ties and solidarity between the human beings who engage in it. Finally, I hold in high esteem the humanist and inclusive values espoused by L’imprimerie, values that are in fact invaluable, making this a place where I feel at home. Where, for a rare occasion, I’ve been offered the chance to blossom.

Biography

At L’imprimerie, Babette is responsible for administrative support (and therefore, your invoices…) but the rest of her time is devoted to various artistic disciplines (drawing, painting, writing, video…). She loves walking to dive into her thoughts.

Babette has been writing and drawing assiduously since childhood. After completing her Master’s degree in painting at the Académie Royale des Beaux-arts in Brussels (Belgium), she specialized in art therapy, leading art workshops for people with autism spectrum disorders. She also did two residencies in Italy to train in fresco painting and took part in several group and solo exhibitions (Belgium, France). At the same time, she devoted herself to writing a novel, then decided to come to Montreal to study creative writing and enter UQAM’s Doctorat in Études et Pratiques des Arts (answer in June, fingers crossed!).
