This fall, Katya Konioukhova is working on a project that allows her to explore alternative photography techniques as part of a residency at L’imprimerie, an artist-run center. She wants to document objects linked to memory—particularly those that evoke immigration and mourning—and that carry personal or family memories.

Her intention is to reveal the trace, shadow, or silhouette of these objects without showing them directly, in order to suggest their presence while leaving plenty of room for abstraction. This project highlights the imprint they leave, rather than their concrete form. It is not the object itself that matters, but what it evokes: a memory that is neither concrete nor material. The blurriness of the images thus becomes a metaphor for the blurriness of memory.

When she recently moved house, she became aware of her attachment to material memories—those small objects that bear the traces of travels and memorable moments. Through this project, she also wants to explore other people’s objects, which are sometimes modest but carry great emotional weight. The aim of the residency will be to catalog these objects in the form of a book, catalog, zine, or exhibition, in order to organize and share these memories.
