L’imprimerie presents the second edition of Le Chantier – a research project on printed and photographic image – about eco-friendly artistic practices. This large research, creation and exchange project aims to generate a dialogue between the artistic, ecological, scientific and entrepreneurial communities and to enable the development of innovative eco-responsible practices. Building on the success of the pro-environmental measures and actions already in place in the studio, the centre wants to position itself as a Canadian leader in eco-friendly artistic practices.

INTERNAL EXPERTISE
Claude Arseneault
Elmyna Bouchard
Deployed between 2020 and 2023, the project pursues three main objectives: to make our practices more eco-responsible as an organization, to allow the development of innovative artistic practices in print and photography in an eco-design approach and to share knowledge with a broader community. As a starting point, L’imprimerie proceeded to the evaluation of its ecological footprint in order to find innovative solutions for the arts sector. The center then invited artists experts Claude Arseneault and Elmyna Bouchard to explore the possibilities of eco-responsible photolithography and to share their knowledge with our studio members through the creation of technical procedures. Their collaborative residency is ongoing until summer 2023 and based on practical and documentary research as well as personal artistic projects.
Research-creation laboratories
Bosny
« Il semble que le plan de guider les abeilles à créer des images selon des pochoirs en trame hexagonale était trop ambitieux – les abeilles ne cherchent pas à suivre les règles que nous leur imposons (let’s go les rebelles!). »
Sophie Cabot
« En découvrant la nature urbaine, on perçoit la ville différemment; ces milieux qui sont presque invisibles deviennent évidents lorsqu’on y accorde notre attention. »
Miri Chekhanovich
« Is it possible to make things – art things in ways that are not adding on to the constant flow of the capital-driven petro-chemical industry ??? […] »
Leyla Majeri
« le bleu nocturne provient des rudbeckies (fleurs aux pétales jaune orange), le mauve des calendules jaunes et l’orange des sulfureuses (cosmos orangés) »
A part of the Chantier included the realization of four research-creation laboratories by professional artists engaged in an eco-friendly process and selected by a jury. Miri Chekhanovich, Bosny, Sophie Cabot and Leyla Majeri have invested the studio between March and December 2022, accompanied by local entrepreneurs and partners Pablo Elizondo, Evan Henry and Myriam Rochon, each of them brought their expertise to the table. These exchanges made it possible to explore new processes and materials that respect nature and the environment.
LA SORTIE DU CHANTIER
L’IMPRIMERIE, centre d’artistes presents La Sortie du Chantier at the Maison de la culture Maisonneuve from April 19 to 22, 2023.
TROMSØ-MONTREAL EXCHANGE PROJECT
Caroline Ariane Bergeron, Marie-Claude Gendron and Jocelyne Thibault, flew to Tromsø for a research-creation residency from June 1st to 30th at Prima Ink Print Studio. The exchange continued in September 2022 when L’imprimerie welcomed Kjellaug Hatlen Lunde, Tegson and Silvia Eliana Martinez, three Norwegian artists from Prima Ink, for a one-month residency in Montreal.
These residencies were an opportunity to stimulate research and encourage the emergence and transfer of know-how related to print and photographic practices in an eco-responsible perspective.
L’imprimerie thanks the Canada Council for the Arts for its support.
