Flavia Majlis’ love story

No artist center at the moment, where art is considered superfluous by the political system, can survive without private funding.

I love L’imprimerie is an emotional fundraising campaign. With great tenderness and kindness, we solicit love letters from our faithful members. This initiative aims to cultivate the love of our community and raise donations to continue to provide professional quality services. Whether through the development of original artistic projects in residency or assisting artists through workshops and training, all the practices of print and photography are supported by the center.

This month, Flavia Majlis shares her love story with L’imprimerie. Flavia has a dual career in Computer Science and visual arts, and is also very involved in the Montreal artistic community and artist-run centers. Indeed, Flavia is one of the co-founders of the Cabinet, espace de production photographique, and was also fully engaged in the process of integration with Atelier Graff, in order to revamp the organization. As a board member of L’imprimerie from 2016 to 2019, and as head of the fundraising committee, she participated in the very early stages of this fundraising campaign, in addition to setting an example by making planned monthly donations since then. It makes us all the more excited to offer you her love story with L’imprimerie.

“My love story with L’imprimerie started around 2010, when the idea of creating le Cabinet was conceived by Catherine, Jacinthe, Noémie and I. The idea of co-founding an artists’ center was born out of our own need to have access to a printing workshop after having completed our university degree, and the desire to share its facilities and create a community of artists. Le Cabinet has become a friendly, but at the same time extremely professional workshop for the production of large format photographs, a place dedicated to the artistic creation and sharing of experiences, mainly though the residency programs and the series of artist conferences, so inspiring! The co-founders donated thousands of hours of work before and after the center opened, donated money, equipment, and most of all, love, lots of love. For us it was a dream come true.

Well, L’imprimerie is that and much more! It was born out of a need to share resources and expertise. It was a beautiful marriage between Atelier Graff and le Cabinet. A true love story. I am so proud to have been part of this process of integration, as a member of the board of le Cabinet, and later of L’imprimerie. I know how hard the whole team has been working to make the center thrive, and I am aware of the financial difficulties that all artist centers face. No artist center nowadays, where art is considered superfluous by the political system, can survive without private funding.

To me, giving to L’imprimerie is my little monthly declaration of love. This is my way of saying: I believe in this project, I trust you. It’s an investment, because I know that these resources will be used to improve and diversify services for the artists members, and to allow more artists to access the center.

That’s why I donate to L’imprimerie, because I’m convinced that if everyone plays their small part, even if tiny, we become very, very strong; because I believe in L’imprimerie and I want this dream to be eternal!”

Flavia chose to support the center she loves with a planned monthly gift. She supports L’imprimerie with small recurring amounts which do not hurt but which are very significant for the pursuit of activities. And you, will you choose to contribute with a monthly donation? It’s so simple!
