Catherine Aboumrad – CUSTOMIZED RESIDENCY
My work is a statement on opulence, absence, organization, and restriction. With a respectful approach, the landscape offers itself freely, connecting essentially to this manifestation of space.
My practice incorporates a significant performative component, where the act of photographing is as integral to the creation as the image it produces. Influenced by time and chance, I maintain a constant state of alertness toward my environment throughout the creative process. In this sense, long exposure is a highly effective strategy and one of my preferred techniques. This approach imposes a slow working pace and demands total intellectual and physical involvement. Although my method is precise and follows a studied routine, the element of waiting introduces its own share of uncertainties.
L’imprimerie’s custom-designed residency offers me the opportunity to begin a photographic series where I will turn my lens toward the sky and explore its connection to the terrestrial landscape. In our busy, noisy, fast-paced lives, the sky may appear unchanging, offering a sense of comfort. Yet, it is anything but static, and far from soothing. I will employ long-exposure photography and instruments commonly used in astronomy to create images that blur the line between figurative and abstract, both day and night. These images will emerge from the interplay of celestial mechanics and a terrestrial environment marked by human references.
